MP3 compression allows you to up load hours of music on a single replaceable
sound card or CD ROM. The MP3 compression technology is being adapted by
Diamond, Samsung, Saehan
and Naiam into a handheld unit to download
and carry anywhere. Basic versions will start around $200 USD. Diamond's
Rio ($200 USD) is selling well (it seems). The others, and the many
more to follow should debut mid 1999. Some upcoming Samsung and Saehan,
"MP MAN" ($260 - $550) units will offer the ability to record real
time using a built in microphone. Saehae will also feature a recordable
memorandum to hold over 1000 phone numbers.
Sony Playstation (not on web
site yet) is working with PSXAmp
to incorporating the ability to play MP3 in their new Playstation systems.
