November 1st and 2nd is an important religious holiday in Mexico and currently gaining much popularity in the southern United States. Also called All Souls Day, it is an occasion marked by festive celebrations to honor the dead. 
   Cemeteries are cleaned and decorated, special food and candies cooked. Home altars are decorated with marigolds, cocks combs, and yellow and purple paper cut outs to guide and welcome the returning souls of the dead. Elaborate altars are filled with treats, favorite foods and gifts that their ancestors enjoyed in life.
 It is a time of joyous remembrance, not of sadness. Gifts are given and prepared for the living as well.  Special songs, poems, foods, and toys are created and exchanged. Special breads are baked and shared with guests.  Handmade brightly decorated sugar skulls (recipe) are personalized and given as tokens of love.
